Located on the Atlantic shore, its economy is based mainly on industry, agriculture and handicrafts. up to the seventies, the sardine fishery had an important place in the city's economy. However, this sector saw its decline at the expense of development of the industrial sector which has caused the pollution of the city’s waters by the chemical waste dumped in its sea, which resulted in the emigration of the queen of the oceans to other healthier horizons. Currently, the art of ceramics is one of the sectors that actively contributes to the economic and tourism development in the city. Some buildings in this city still attest to the passage of the Portuguese, including its sea castle dating from the sixteenth century and neear to which we can see a platform where guns, used at that time for the protection of the fortress, are still lined up.
